Launch of the Backyard Bounty Collective
The Backyard Bounty Collective is pleased to announce their official launch:
Meet and eat with City Hall Councilors and Vancouver’s 4 newest “farmpreneurs”, and celebrate what is possible in backyard food production!
April 15th, 2010
10 – 10:45am
Vancouver City Hall Community Garden
The Backyard Bounty Collective is made up of four young, urban “farmpreneurs” who, with the support of the Environmental Youth Alliance and Farm Folk/City Folk, and funding from a Vancity EnviroVisa grant, are working to bring backyard food production in Vancouver to a vibrant new level. We represent four distinct areas of urban backyard food production: honeybees, mushrooms, laying hens and aquaponics.
We are celebrating our launch with a tasting menu prepared by Chef Andrea Carlson of Bishop’s restaurant, served to our city politicians beside the City’s own community garden. The canapés will feature ingredients that can be raised in the various systems developed by the Backyard Bounty Collective members. Among our guests of distinction are Councilors Andrea Reimer and Heather Deal. The members of the collective will be available for interviews and will have demonstration models of their systems for public viewing.
We are committed to widespread education and empowerment of youth, school-aged kids and community members. Through public workshops, client relationships, online blogging and resources, and educational events the collective will play an important role in providing sustainable, local and ethical food sources for people in urban environments in Metro Vancouver.
