Vancouver Cantata Singers: Baltic composers feature

What is a Cantata? It is a musical composition for voice normally containing multiple movements. Historically, Cantatas formed part of a church service. For example, it was Bach's duty to compose and perform a church Cantata every Sunday and Holiday in Leipzig, Germany in the early to mid-1700s. In Italian, "Cantata" literally means "sung" or "to sing".
The Vancouver Cantata Singers, under the direction of Eric Hannan have been preparing for a show featuring unique choral traditions from the shores of the Baltic Sea.
The concert will feature the music of Estonian composers Pärt and Tormis, Polish composer Górecki and Latvian-Canadian composer, Jānis Kalniņš.
This event is taking place Saturday, May 1st at 8:00pm at Ryerson United Church, 2195 West 45th Avenue in Vancouver.
"In the 2008 CBC National Choir Competition, The Vancouver Cantata Singers placed first in the Chamber Choir category in addition to winning the coveted Healy Willan Grand Prize, awarded to the choir giving the most convincing performance in musicianship, technique and program."
