SFU Faculty of Education Taking Critical Social Justice Education To New Levels

Equity Studies info sessions; Thurs. January 28, 2016 from 4:30-5:30pm, SFU Vancouver, Harbour Centre, HC1600 and Fri. January, 29, 2016 1:00-2:00pm, SFU Burnaby, EDB 8541

We hear a lot about social justice education within K-12 and post-secondary institutions. However, many people who are already engaging in Critical Social Justice Education work can often be found working in not-for-profit and humanitarian organizations, hospitals, corrections and law enforcement, social work, media, immigrant services and other contexts.

SFU’s new master’s program in Curriculum and Instruction: Equity Studies in Education aims to bring students from a broad range of educational settings together to develop expertise in an equity framework within their own situations and communities.

“Highlighting how equity work may manifest in different ways opens possibilities for coming together as a collective towards a shared vision of social justice education for all,” says Dr. Ena Lee, Academic Co-Coordinator.

Students will study historical and current scholarship as well as research-based evidence related to social in/equity in topics such as:

Critical Indigenous Education

Queer/LGBT Studies

Human Rights Education

Youth, Media, and Popular Culture

Critical Literacies

Anti-Racism Education

Critical Race Feminisms

They will also engage in a critical, self-reflective stance on the barriers and opportunities encountered when working towards a more just society.

Dr. Dolores van der Wey, Associate Professor and Academic Co-Coordinator, adds, “What excites Ena and me about this program is the opportunity to immerse in scholarship and discussions across specializations in equity studies with colleagues and graduate students who are similarly committed to this work. For example, in the past, Ena and I have addressed common issues in our respective specializations (Critical English as an Additional Language Education and Critical Indigenous Education) while still recognizing the differences in our two areas.”

The Curriculum and Instruction: Equity Studies in Education master’s program begins September 2015 and will be accepting applications until March 15, 2015.

To provide flexibility for working students, some courses may be offered via alternative modes and across SFU’s three campuses—Burnaby, Vancouver, Surrey.
