Chinese New Year: YouTube celebs Peter Chao and Bubbi share their favorite memories

We asked two hyphenated Chinese YouTube personalities about their fondest memories of the Chinese New Year, and here's what they had to say.

Peter Chao, a Vancouver comic known for his outrageously offensive but funny videos, has enticed the likes of 732, 625 subscribers to his wildly popular, and politically incorrect YouTube channel. Playing down his "fresh-off-the-boat" accent, Chao sentimentally offered these remembrances of the Chinese New Year:

"The fondest memories I have of Chinese New Year is the opportunity to spend it with family. After five years living away from home, one realizes how family serves the utmost importance," Chao reminisced.

"Another memory was when I was younger, I used to perform the lion dance and I would be delegated to "The Ass", or the tail, so I'd be spending most of my Chinese New Year as a brown-noser. And who can forget the red envelopes?"

Self-coined "everyday girl" Lindy Tsang, aka Bubbi, is the creator of BubzBeauty, and Originally the creative outlet for a harangued University student, the BubzBeauty YouTube channel now boasts 963, 039 subscribers, making Bubbi the most subscribed fashion guru in the UK. Her beauty tutorials and other videos have racked up more than 195 million views on YouTube, attracting fans from around the world.

"My favourite tradition of Chinese New Year has to be the food," she admitted, "My granny would wake up extra early to prepare and I would always wake up wearing brand new clothes because it's tradition to wear new clothes for the New Year."

"All my aunties and uncles would come to celebrate in our house," continued Bubbi, "and it would be such a happy and warm atmosphere. One year, I ate 4 bowls of rice and my granny was so happy she gave me an extra red pocket. I was well happy! Happy lunar year sweethearts!"
